Quotidian is a great word for impressing in-laws or getting out of a date:

"Hey, how about dinner tomorrow night?"
"Sorry, I'm overwhelmed with the quotidian."
"Gosh, I didn't even know you were sick."

(If the word gosh offends you, fill in with a suitable euphemism).
